Malaysia’s Roundabouts: Which States Have the Most?
MALAYSIA – Some might say you can’t drive through certain parts of Selangor without hitting a roundabout every few minutes.
So, we set out to answer the question: Which parts of Malaysia have the most roundabouts, by state and by district? Using nationwide data from OpenStreetMap, we mapped every roundabout across all states and districts.

Which State Has the Most ROUNDABOUTS?
Selangor leads with 827 roundabouts, more than a quarter of Malaysia’s total 3,061.
Followed by Sabah (577) and Johor (355). The lowest counts are in Kelantan (34), Perlis (18) and W.P. Labuan (12).
Roundabout Density
Looking only at the total number of roundabouts can be misleading. A large state might have more roundabouts overall simply because it covers more area, while a small but urbanised state can have far more roundabouts packed into each square kilometre.
How to read this:
W.P. Putrajaya has 1 roundabout for every 0.7 square kilometres. In practical terms, that means roundabouts are spaced roughly 700 metres apart on average.
Meanwhile, states like Sarawak and Pahang cover vast areas but have relatively few roundabouts, averaging just one for every > 300 square kilometres.

Malaysia’s Roundabout Champions
Petaling leads with 282 roundabouts, ahead of Johor Bahru and Kota Kinabalu, and Selangor dominates the list with four districts in the Top 10.
State Deep Dives: Selangor & Sabah (Top 2 States by District)
Since Selangor and Sabah are the top two states, let’s break them down by district to see how the roundabouts are distributed.
Selangor: Petaling leads with 282 (34% of Selangor’s total), followed by Ulu Langat with 143 (17%) and Klang with 133 (16%)
Sabah: 157 of the roundabouts are in Kota Kinabalu, making up 27% of total Sabah, followed by Sandakan at 89 (15%)
