Sunway Square in Malaysia: Malaysia’s Newest Shopping Mall
MALAYSIA – Malaysia has just welcomed another shopping mall: Sunway Square Mall. This blog breaks down its proximity to the famous shopping mall, Sunway Pyramid, as well as the number of shopping malls in Malaysia. Do note that we also published an analysis on shopping malls in October 2025 (link).
How Close Are the Two Shopping Malls?

One of the most notable aspects of this new mall is its location, as it sits remarkably close to Sunway Pyramid, one of Malaysia’s most famous shopping malls. The distance between the two is roughly 800m.
The map is showing the exact distance between the two malls, a simple but important context for understanding how the new mall fits into Sunway City’s retail flow.
State Distribution

As of December 2025, Selangor leads with 93 malls (22.4%), followed by W.P. Kuala Lumpur (18.6%). As mentioned in the previous blog, W.P. Labuan records the fewest, with just 1 mall (Financial Park Complex Labuan)
Top 10 Districts

At the district level, a few areas clearly dominate Malaysia’s shopping mall landscape:
- W.P. Kuala Lumpur: 19% of all malls nationwide.
- Petaling (Selangor): 12% of the national total, including the new Sunway Square Mall.
- Kuching (Sarawak): 33 outlets, making up about 8%, for example: AEON Mall Kuching Central and Boulevard Shopping Mall.
- Johor Bahru (Johor): Following closely behind Kuching, Sarawak. Some notable malls include Paradigm Mall Johor Bahru and Mid Valley Southkey
- Timur Laut (Pulau Pinang): Notable cluster in George Town and surrounding areas. (E.g: Gurney Plaza)
Mall Distribution in Petaling

With the new Sunway Square mall opening, this is also a good opportunity to take a closer look at Petaling District. In total, the district has 48 malls, and as shown in the map, most of them are slightly concentrated around the Petaling Jaya area.
