Malaysia’s Heritage Places

MALAYSIA – Malaysia Day is more than a date on the calendar, it’s also a reminder of the stories, struggles, and heritage that shaped our nation. Let’s take this moment to explore Malaysia’s renowned heritage sites, proudly listed under UNESCO’s World Heritage.

Currently, there are two UNESCO World Heritage sites in Sarawak, one is a park dominated by a mountain (Gunung Mulu or Mount Mulu), while the other is the Niah National Park. The remaining four sites are located in Selangor, Sabah, Perak, and Melaka.

Gunung Mulu National Park

Gunung Mulu National Park, located in Marudi district, Sarawak, is recognized by UNESCO for both its incredible biodiversity and its remarkable karst features.

According to UNESCO: The park features caves, canyons, escarpments, and limestone pinnacles, all dominated by Gunung Mulu, a 2,376-metre-high sandstone peak. It is the most extensively studied tropical karst area in the world. Within the Melinau Formation, the park holds an extraordinary concentration of caves that reveal a geological history spanning more than 1.5 million years.

Niah National Park

The Archaeological Heritage of Niah National Park’s Caves Complex, located in Subis district, Sarawak, holds one of the longest known records of human interaction with rainforest, spanning at least 50,000 years, from the Pleistocene to the Mid-Holocene periods.

According to UNESCO. the site’s rich archaeological deposits, prehistoric rock paintings, and boat-shaped burials at the northern edge of the massif provide invaluable insights into biological and human life during this time. They contribute greatly to our understanding of human development, adaptation, and migration in Southeast Asia, as well as in the global context. From a natural perspective, the area around the caves is also covered by lush rainforest and tidal swamp forest.

Forest Research Institute Malaysia Forest Park Selangor

Forest Research Institute Malaysia Forest Park Selangor (FRIM), located in Gombak district, Selangor, is a human-made tropical rainforest established in the 1920s on degraded tin-mining land.

The place includes scientific, residential, and service buildings, along with water bodies and trails. It represents a pioneering reforestation initiative that successfully transformed barren land into a mature lowland tropical forest, an early example of ecological restoration and sustainable land rehabilitation.

Kinabalu Park

Kinabalu Park, located in Kota Marudu district, Sabah, is home to Malaysia’s highest mountain, Mount Kinabalu (4,095 m / 13,435 ft). Designated as a Centre of Plant Diversity for Southeast Asia, the park is exceptionally rich in species, showcasing a unique mix of flora from the Himalayas, China, Australia, Malaysia, and across the tropics.

Archaeological Heritage of the Lenggong Valley

Archaeological Heritage of the Lenggong Valley is located in Hulu Perak district, Perak. This site includes four archaeological sites grouped into two clusters. Spanning nearly 2 million years, it holds one of the longest records of early human presence in a single locality, and the oldest known outside the African continent.

Melaka and George Town, Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca

Located in Melaka Tengah, Melaka and George Town represent over 500 years of trading and cultural exchanges between East and West. Their historic architecture and multicultural heritage reflect a unique blend of Asian and European influences, showcasing Malaysia’s role as a key hub in the Straits of Malacca.
